Location: Cologne

Participants: 15 people, as requested
Today, THE emblem of Cologne is on the agenda: The Cologne Cathedral, with its two 157 m high spires, has been the emblem of the city for centuries and is the most famous architectural monument in Germany. It took 632 years to completely build it: the largest Cathedral in Germany. Following the laying of the cornerstone in 1248 and a brisk beginning, the construction work slowly came to a standstill. The pace of the construction work only began to increase again in 1842. The completion of the Cathedral was celebrated nationally in 1880. With an expert at your side you will explore the Gothic cathedral from various points of view:
· Cathedral close-up: Explore the fantastic architecture of the Cathedral, the marvellous works of art and the impressive windows as well as the many amusing stories etc. on the ‘normal’ tour, close-up to the Cathedral.
or/and
· Cathedral foundations: A descent into the excavations under the Cathedral; to the precursor constructions of the Gothic Cathedral.
or/and
· Cathedral-treasury: The relics of the Three Magi have found their last resting place here. The shrine of the Three Kings (from the 13th century) exceeds other comparable gold sarcophagi of the Christian Occident in size and magnificence. Further outstanding works of art are to be found in the Cathedral treasury.
